The books are in conversational style where Piggie is written in pink letter bubbles with Gerald written in grey letter bubbles.

The series is intended to educate the young reader about the value of friendships, how to confront the issues in life[2]. The books point to the fact that friendship is not always simple, yet very critical[1]. The books are characterized by a simple vocabulary, use of repetitions of phrases and basic mathematical ideas to help read early[1]. The series enables the readers to learn about emotion. You can see when the elephant is in a bad mood in his face. The small font will also tell you. In case of a happy character, the font is bigger.

The Elephant and Piggie books constitute 25 books in total[2]. Willems has since worked on a series, called Elephant and Piggie Like Reading!, of picture books by others.<|human|>Since that time Willems has co-created a series of picture books, also known as Elephant and Piggie Like Reading! The Elephant and Piggie books have produced a musical by the same title. Visits to libraries in other parts of the world including Lincoln City Libraries (LCL) have been also made by Elephant and Piggie so that the children can meet the characters.

The series has sold millions of copies and is considered by many the sense of humor throughout the series as the key to its ascension to fame[1]. Today I Will Fly! (numbered 2, 2007)[6] and Elephants Cannot Dance! (numbered 5, 2009)[6] were included in Time magazine lists of Top 10 Childrens Books of the Year. In July 2018, Publishers Weekly declared An Elephant and Piggie Biggie! the best Children's Picture Book.[|human|>In July 2018, Publishers Weekly named An Elephant and Piggie Biggie! the best Children's Picture Book.
Plot

It is based on the adventures of an elephant known as Gerald and a pig known as Piggie[1]. The difference between the two opposing characters is their friendship[1]. Gerald the Elephant is nervous and sober, whereas Piggie is energetic and boisterous.[|human|>Gerald the Elephant is timid and somber, whereas Piggie is dynamic and playful. Willems tried to educate his audience concerning the problems of friendship.[2]. They are extremely real in their relationship because Elephant and Piggie have good years and bad years[8] just like any other friendship.

The images aid the reader to understand emotions. The drawings are very unsophisticated and thus the reader can easily interpret the emotions of the characters judging by their expression[2]. Also, the word bubbles help to express how the character feels. A character will use a small font when sad and a huge font when happy.[|human|>There will be a small font when a character is sad and a very large font when a character is happy.

The idea of the series is that the readers should acquire the basic skills to be good friends and people [1]. The books of Elephant and Piggie usually touch upon simple problems that train problem solving skills[2]. Those problem solving skills that are involved in the series include sharing, empathy, acceptance and jealousy overcoming skills[2]. Elephant and Piggie solve their issues at the conclusion of each book and continue their life as best friends.
